First off you may have heard or read the term OEM. This means (Original Equipment Manufacturer) referring to the Brand Name original product manufacturer and their original ink and toner cartridge products. This term is used in other industries and has similar connotations.
In the office world or should I say the cartridge world of today there is many flavors of cartridges and many names for the flavors which I will get into soon enough. There is an addional 10,000 or more different manufacturers some homegrown operations and some small brick and mortar to the large corporate entities that are offering recycled ink and toners.
Quality controls standards are not existent industry wide per say, nor is there any standards for the words or definitions used to describe such products. While this may be the case many manufactures implement high quality control standards and check to make sure their product is sound, and there are standards in general for quality control in any manufacturing, it is not industry wide for this particular industry, yet!
I hope within this article I bring to light the missing data about Recycled vs. OEM.
All cartridges are not created equal, as I have already alluded to. The terms used to market cartridges have changed just as the technology that allows near perfect recycling has.
Yester years “DRILL AND FILL” is long gone or should be. Today’s quality replacement parts along with modern technologies make it easy to perform the processes that are needed for perfect quality.
Now we have these terms: Recycle, Re-fill, Remanufactured, Reconditioned, and Compatible. What the heck?
You may ask what is the difference? Here it is:
While not all companies involved follow such guidelines I have the following now defined:
1.Recyceled: A cartridge that has been cleaned and refilled and has an unknown or unspecified number of the imaging components replaced. While it may be tested the above is the case.
2. Refilled: A cartridge that has been cleaned and refilled and tested.
3.Remanufactured: A cartridge that has had all of the imaging components replaced and the cartridge tested.
4.Reconditioned: is only defined as made to be like new, which would lead one to believe that this would be also defined as Remanufactured.
5.Compatible: This term can mean any of the above, and is miss-used a lot. It is supposed to mean Brand New manufactured with no recycled parts. Designed to work like the original but cost a little less. This term is used by some to reinvent the over used terms like recycled, refilled, remanufactured, reconditioned cartridge.
Well so far we have only defined some words and terms, we are yet to discuss the meat of the matter. I always like to say ‘The Proof Is In The Print”.
It really boils down to this not all cartridge are created equal while the original equipment manufacture’s cartridge only has a reported 2% failure rate and you can buy it at retail. The Recycle, Re-fill, Remanufactured, Reconditioned, or Compatible replacement cartridge may save you 50-70% depending on the vendor, and additionally may have a 2% or higher failure rate. The saving can out weigh the trouble. It really boils down to the service you get and the confidence you have in your supplier to replace any cartridge you have a problem with free of charge. Well this should be the case for any defective product. You would want to settle down with one that has both price and a good product. If you get to many defective cartridges it will interrupt your workflow and cost you a “Hidden” bundle.
Non – OEM ink and toner cartridge are designed to last just as long and work just as good.
You do not have to worry about it voiding your warranty and as a matter of fact it is illegal for any OEM to say you must only use their brand of Ink and Toner. This would be a direct violation of the Magnussson-Moss Warranty Act.
