This unit was purchased for a single-disc CD player Denon replaced and connected to a Yamaha Natural Sound Stereo Amplifier new AR9 speaker cones driving. Well engineering classical piano CD deluxe sound natural to my ears is a logical approach to live performance. Readers know what is right and only disc CD player is not cheap. This component provides the best audio performance Yamaha stopped at a moderate price. A small quibble is that the sound control directly from the bypass circuit may include video screen switches to the disc. However, the organization of the direct sound no difference in sound that the listener can detect.

Cost-effective DVD/CD/SACD player
I bought the S1800 (which Amazon offered at a very attractive price, brand new) because I'd had trouble with my S1500, an earlier Yamaha foray into this niche: a DVD player that also will play SACDs. The S1500 is bad news, unreliable, and I realized when I got it that it was a "refurbished" device with a short (30-day) warranty. Naturally, the defects became clear only when that period had elapsed. I had to FreeCycle the S1500, no remedy available, but Yamaha's other devices I've owned had all been of such good quality I wasn't quite prepared to write them off. The S1800, I'm glad to say, does everything the S1500 was supposed to but without the maddening defects. Reliable operation, good video, great audio. I particularly like that it has multi-channel analogue outs in addition to the usual digital outs (optical, coax). The only reason I don't give it five stars for ease of use it that it continues Yamaha's quirk of having separate buttons on the remote for power on and power off. It's easy to forget this and get frustrated trying to turn the device off--until you remember the quirk.
All things considered, a worthy purchase.
Great piece of equipment!
Even at it's current price, it's still a remarkable bargain. You don't see build quality like this anymore unless you spends hundred's of dollars. So glad I did'nt go with Sony NS710H, this is sooooo much nicer. When your wife notices a piece of stereo equipment you know it's quality lol. I think it's hand's down, no brainer best upconverting DVD player you can buy, being able to play SACD's is just gravy at this price point.
