The procedure for Gastric Banding surgery:
The gastric band is placed around the stomach by laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) under general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes a few small incisions in the abdomen through which he will insert the instruments and a camera. The camera enables the surgeon to see inside and to control the instruments. A small tunnel is made behind the top of the stomach and the band is wrapped around and then locked securely to form the small stomach pouch. The band is left empty or only partially filled for the first 6-8 weeks after surgery. The reason for this is to allow the stomach to settle after the surgery and it is in your own interest that this does happen.
A port, through which the gastric band adjustment (or fill) will be done, is inserted under the skin in the left flank or just beneath the breastbone. The wounds are covered with water resistant transparent dressings, which are left in place for 10 days. If there are stitches these can be removed after 10 days. Wounds may also be closed with steri-strips, medical glue or dissolving stitches in which case removal will not be necessary.

The band can be adjusted to accommodates the increased need for food e.g. during pregnancy.
3.Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG) - This procedure of Gastric Banding uses a combination of staples and band. In this procedure, staples are used to create a small pouch, which limits the amount of food that can be eaten at one time. The band then prevents the food from leaving the pouch too quickly thus giving you a full feeling that lasts longer.
4.Silastic Ring Gastroplasty (SRG) - In this procedure, a silastic ring is placed at the stoma to control its size and prevent it from over stretching.
