LED-Monitor Top Buying Tips
We can't wait to bring home our new LED-LCD monitor. Same here! But here is the question, do you know what you're buying? Or is it worth buying at all?
Here are the characteristics of and LED-LCD monitors that I've gathered before buying mine.
Do you know that LEDs are just used as backlight to the LCD not to display the images?
LED Backlight
As marketing goes LED backlight monitors are now popularized as LED monitors, it is quite wrong because LD monitors are those huge advertisement billboard where images are formed thousands of individual LEDs.
Here are different types of LED-LCD monitors:
1.RGB triads. It is a tri color lead or precisely 3 LEDs combined one red, one green and one blue LED. This is good and the best but only used in professional monitors because it is expensive and not economical.
2. Flat backlight based on white LEDs. This backlights are evenly distributed in the plane parallel to the LCD matrix, this allows setting the backlight intensity differently in different parts of the screen when necessary. A cool feature that most of us do not need.
3. Edge backlight with white LEDs. Backlights are placed in line along the edge of LCD matrix, an specially designed diffuser is used to get the uniform brightness of the screen. This type of backlighting cannot offer zonal brightness control like Flat backlight. It also not good in extended color gamut. Instead it is the most economical and compact backlighting design popular to our laptop, LCD monitor and even to our mobile devices.
Note: LED light-emitting diodes do not contain mercury which makes it environmentally friendly than its counterpart cold-cathode lamps.
Most of home monitors come with an edge backlight base on white LEDs.
So, ordinary home monitors usually come with an edge backlight based on white LEDs. Other types of LED-based backlights may become popular in the future, but that's what we have now.
Sales agent would promise that an LED backlight would affect nearly all of a monitor's features and characteristics. Really now?
Contrast ratio, this is dependent on the characteristics of the LCD matrix, transparency ratio levels of open and closed pixels. Absolutely not dependent on its backlight or type of the backlight.
Dynamic contrast, LED can be lit up instantly or turned out completely which is a real high level of dynamic.
Brightness uniformity, LED specially designed diffuser is in-charge here, it distributes the light evenly to the entire monitor.
Color gamut is affected by color filter of the LCD matrix and the backlight's radiation spectrum.
Color accuracy, backlight is just white backlight. White without other color. Aside from LCD matrix color controller is playing a key role in this aspect.
This may break some of the myths about LED-LCD monitor but it is good to know.
